Photographic Artist ~ Freshly Made Pictures (TM) by Tony Lilley

Tony Lilley photographing the river Tummel in Scotland ~ by Jonathan Lilley

At
the age of 10 before I had a camera or knew how to use one, films shown at my school by projector would fill me with wonder, of the events shown, and how the machine managed to do this through light. I made my own projector at home using a torch fitted into a cardboard box and I cut a square hole for the film gate and slots in it to pull through a paper strip. The paper strip was to be the film. I had drawn a series of small pictures on the paper strip and then carefully cut them out to create shadows of the picture shapes on the wall. This is how I started to experiment with light and opened the way to begin my interest in photography and art.

I first started taking photographs at about the age of 14 with a plastic Samtoy roll film camera that I bought from Woolworths. A couple of years later I started to develop my own black and white film and prints using a mixture of equipment given to me by my uncle, and some I had bought myself. Much of the processing work was done in the bathroom, or attic.
I became interested in the way light and objects can be used to make patterns on photographic paper. I didn’t find out until years later that this is called a photogram.

I had always used film cameras, but as soon as digital cameras became available I looked forward to the day that they would be as good as a film camera.  Then about 10 years ago I became hooked on digital photography when I had my first digital camera. Since then the world of digital photography has inspired my passion for creative images.

The Magicians Cat
Part of one of my early digital pictures called the Magicians Cat.
Taken with my first digital camera, a Fuji Film 2.1Mp Compact.

Summer Solstice
Lady in Red is one of my first digitally constructed images. All parts of this image were taken at various locations in the Cotswolds England on the summer solstice. The sun is real. All parts were taken with my first digital camera, a Fujifilm Compact 2.1Mp.

My personal work has covered a wide range of still photography in various formats including pinhole photography and black & white film and print processing. I have also experimented with motion picture film and digital video including stop frame animation using film and digital camcorders to create short movies, mixing animated plasticene characters and real life events.

A few years later.......

St Ives Bridge
Saint Ives Bridge Panoramic. Created by 3 separate images stitched together.

Photographed with a Canon EOS 300D and EFS 18 - 55mm Lens.

My photography covers Scenic, Travel, Still life, Abstract and artistically constructed Surreal and Fantasy images. My main work is Stock Photography, Photographic Art and making mounted and framed prints of my pictures.

Stock images are usually sold through a photo library and used in magazines, books, newspapers, advertising etc, in fact a huge range of publications including TV.

In photographic art I am starting to combine printed digital inkjet images with other media to create a single piece of original art. I am currently experimenting with image transfers onto wood, ceramics, plaster and hand made paper or canvas, combined with other media such as acrylic paint and pastels and more !
Each piece of art created in this way is unique and more collectable.

I enjoy creating an image by building a small set/scene. Many of the objects I use are old, and re-cycled or made by myself for the purpose. Some parts of an image are created from scanned materials and objects or from my own drawn / painted artwork.

In what I call my "real world" sets, I often build a scene, that incorporates some dynamic or animation. This type of set is fully created in real life and has no digital composite element. The final image that you see, is sometimes produced by a carefully staged series of events that create the final picture. This may be made from changing lighting during the exposure and applying movement or smoke etc to the scene before the camera shutter closes. This has to be planned very carefully and timing is sometimes critical.

I like to experiment with different ways of creating an image to give it a surreal or fantasy appearance and have an air of mystery. Low light and night photography are one of my favourite ways of creating an atmospheric picture and I enjoy experimenting with a wide range of light sources to create the required effect.

Technical info:
My computer monitor, scanner and printer are fully calibrated to give accurate
repeatable colour.

Studio fitted with full spectrum daylight lamps for accurate colour assessment.

All pictures are taken in Canon RAW format and are then converted to uncompressed TIFF files in Adobe RGB 1998 colour space for final processing and storage.
Photo library images are 300dpi level 12 JPEG format.

Prints are created using Epson Ultra Chrome pigmented ink on Epson Premium
Glossy or Archival Matte paper on an Epson wide body printer for long lasting high quality prints up to 18" X 12".

I intend to experiment with other types of paper because each type of paper can
give an image a different look. Some images work better on specific types of paper,
e.g. snow scenes tend to look better on matte paper.

I use the paper that the image looks best on unless you state a preference.

Prints have been found to last for more than 100 years on Premium Glossy paper and Archival Matte paper when mounted behind glass in a frame and hung out of direct sun light.
Check out the Wilhelm Research organisation for print life test data.
